Folk Group Leader: Mary Richardson |
Every 4th Sunday in the month St David Lewis have a Folk Mass. I was asked to start this by members of the community to add an extra musical element to their worship. Gradually more and more people are taking up the challenge to come to church a little earlier and, if not sit as part of the music group, then to listen, join in and learn the music for the liturgy. As with all liturgy the aim is to match the music used to the theme and readings of the Mass, as a result the St David Lewis congregation are learning a new range of hymns of praise - so far the feedback has been very positive. When
I agreed to prepare and play music for the 4th Sunday, the hope was
that muscians from within the local community would come, be a part
and perhaps take over the provision of Folk Music for themselves. So
far no local talents have come forward: We practice for the Mass from 10.15a.m. All Are Welcome. Mary. |

St
Mary's is home to perhaps the widest range of music in the Parish. Currently
there is organ, piano and folk music used to celebrate the various Weekend
Masses. In previous years there have been various Youth Music Groups,
a Ladies Choir and a vibrant Filipino Music Group.

St. Mary's Organ The magnificent organ found at St Mary's was placed as a memorial to the men of the congregation who gave their lives during the Great War. |

Folk Choir Leader: Tony Bispham |
The folk choir was instigated in the early 1970's by Father Tony Hampson. In it's infancy the choir was led by music teacher and professional choir master Mr David Owen. It was a time of the dawning of a new style of liturgical music and we were at the forefront of this change. We used to tour South Wales in a double decker bus and sing in lots of the parishes throughout the region. The choir was also part of the massed voices at Pontcanna Field, Cardiff, when the then Pope John Paul II made his momentous visit to Wales in 1982. When David Owen left the choir I took upon the challenge of leading from behind my guitar. In past years I have seen many changes in style and personnel. When the Parish of All Saints was formed on 1st November 2007, the folk choir, along with members from other communities, helped to provide music for the celebration. At present we are small group, but what we lack in numbers we make up for with enthusiasm. We are always open to new members either vocal or instrumental. We rehearse from 5.00pm on a Sunday in the church (except the 2nd Sunday of the month). Come along - give it a try. - Tony. |
